How much do you drink? I used to drink 24/7
it resulted in me having a stroke at the age
of 31.Heavy or excessive drinking doesn't
just affect the liver or heart it affects the
brain too.I suffered a bleed on the right
handside of my brain which left me disabled
on my left handside but in a quirky sort of
way my stroke did me a favour because I am
now dry and sober 24/7 but I wouldn't want
anyone to go through what I went through.Mail
me your thoughts be great to hear

I might have Korsakoff's Syndrome (alcohol
induced dementia) - but can a demented person
know they are demented? Answers on a beer
mat. |

My half-sister's father had alcohol induced
dementia, it was frightening to say the
least! He'd do really insane things and he
would not remember later? He'd wake everyone
up after drinking all night and beat us with
a thick leather belt, my half-sister, our
mother and myself. We filmed him with the
8-mm camera and he denied that was him doing
those terrible things even though the film
did not lie! Alcohol destroys lives of
everyone around the alcoholic. I never
started drinking as I saw where it could
lead. |

I agree, it does destroy lives. It is a
terrible drug that affects all major organs
in the body. Usually its not until the
drinker hits rock bottom and loses everything
that he may or may not decide to go for help.
At the end of the day only he can decide
what path he/she will take, noone can
persuade them they have to want to stop
themselves |

When people talk about booze, they always
tell us about excess-- which if theyv`e
suffered is fair enough-- however-- the local
British pub and the culture and friendships
that go with it , are irreplaceable... three
of four pints with your mates.. watch a footy
match on TV..jokes... maybe a singsong...
look forget the few excesses and concentrate
on the pleasure it brings to millions. |

I agree with you Freddo. Personally, I don't
drink and never have but I can still
understand the social element of going to the
pub. I see nothing wrong in it as long as
the individual knows when to stop drinking.
I think the trouble with alcohol is the same
as with smoking. The damage caused by excess
can take years to show and by the time it
does, its usually irreversable. I think this
is the reason that so many people chose to
ignore the warnings, prefering to label
people who give them as being killjoys or
busybodies. There will always be some people
who believe "one more won't hurt" or "I can
handle it" etc but I wonder how many people
that have serious health issues now because
of that attitude would give anything to turn
the clock back 20 years and change their
attitudes. |

As a rule of thumb.... keep off the wine and
the top shelf. It would be very difficult to
drink to the excesses just consuming real
ales... particularly if you drink only
session beers...(usually lower than 4%
abv).... |
