Why do so many people make mistakes when
writing these words ?
Why can people not differentiate between
them ?
Its is basic English and one of the first
things that is learnt in School , yet many
Adults routinely use the wrong option .
Why is this ? |

The reason that they're (the writers) are
[censored]ing up their words is the fact that
they are not taught well enough when they're
at school. The teachers seem to be more
intersted in getting the school uniform to
conform to the acceptable standards than
taking time with academic pursuits. All my
daughter's teacher seems to worry about is
the fact that my littl'un has a braid in her
hair, not how she is getting on with her
work. When the education standards start to
get the priority list in order then we may
see some improvement in the general literacy
of the masses. Fingers crossed, eh?! |

culpepper : I'm talking about adults though ,
and it seems to be a mainly British thing ,
most Foreigners know when to use the correct
word, but there seems to be many British
people who cannot tell the difference between
the words , the problem seems to be
widespread .
How come so many British people routinely
make basic erros in their mother tongue ?
It really is disgraceful |

I don't know if I should be pleased or
dismayed by Allison's description of me.
'Txt spk' I can live with, but the incorrect
usage of words that sound the same but have
totally different meanings get right up my
nose.
I'm going to post a new thread about 'txt
spk' that will probably surprise quite a few
people - I was when I learnt about it
yesterday. |

It wasnt an error or a grammatical
mistake.....it was simply a missing letter .
And I believe that I wrote it initially did
correctly and the letter got lost
somewhere.....or maybe I just missed it
out.......as I said , it was rather pedantic
of you to mention it |

isn't that a mistake...
""Its is basic English""
Shouldn't it be, "it's a basic" OR "it is a
basic" ?
Since "its" is a possessive adjective?

Yes Lucy :
"Its is" is incorrect , but I wasn't
talking about one-off silly mistakes , I was
talking about people knot knowing the
difference between *You're, Your, Their,
They're, There*
I was talking about people routinely
choosing the wrong option, rather than the
occasional silly mistake |

have you ever thought in your arrogant small
mindedness, it could be just other peoples
simple mistakes?
This is a chat room forum, not oxford
university.
I do make simple spelling mistakes and
grammar errors here, because I type fast and
don't check for such errors.
I don't see the big issues, other than
peoples constant picking, used for negative
criticism, which is a form of bullying,
instead of constructive criticism, which is
being helpful. |

No it isn't . People not knowing the

They're, There* isn't a simply mistake , it's
a complete misunderstanding of basic English |

Maybe the English language is far too
complex-ed than it needs to be, why have so
many words that sounds the same but mean
something totally different, maybe its our
language that is very flawed. |

It can be to some, but then again, as you
called me earlier today "I'm just thick!"
It's a shame some people can make such
arrogant judgements on others because of such
simple mistakes.
You seem to make a mistake per post fluke,

ABOT instead of "about"

And as I keep typing, this is only a public

simples mistakes, just like you.
And isn't it very irritating when somebody
picks fault with every post you make.

On an informal forum such as this, Allison, I
suppose it does not matter a great deal.
Does it annoy me when I see an obviously
intelligent person make a stupid error? Yes.
It is an insult to their own undoubted
intellect.

Storm, making 10 mistakes in one post is
quite an achievement, so I take my hat off to
you.
I will iterate that this thread is about the
use of English and not personal preferences.
As a Moderator, what DO you pounce upon?
Racist, sexist or other remarks that you do
not agree with?
The author made a very good point that, in my
opinion, was worthwhile debating.

Well, if nothing else, these comments have
provoked a few interesting responses, but I
detect a certain amount of "protesting too
loudly".
I don't think I am superior to anyone else
here, indeed I think that some have an
inferiority complex that has nothing to do
with me.
Just because I would prefer people to write
correct English does not make me a dictator.
I’m entitled to my own opinion as well.
