No Child of Mine: Peter Kosminsky's
BAFTA-winning drama is about a 13-year-old
girl, Kerry, who is sexually abused and set
up as a prostitute by her father.
Its a heart breaking drama that shows a girl
growing up being abused by adults.. even her
own father and mother sexually abused her and
let others sexually abuse her. People who
were in caring professions sexually abused
her. How can we not in today's society
protect children from such horrific abuse?
Nobody was ever charged and it seems very few
adults ever get charged with such evil
crimes.. how can that be?
Didn't see it, but don't you find it amazing
how people can adopt such a warped morality?
What kind of environment did the parents
evolve in - it must have been similar to the
childs.
The reason I mentioned parents, is that a few
weeks ago an Australian court gave a menial
sentence for a group of Aboriginals have sex
with a 12 or 13 yr old - sex at such a young
age is considered normal in some societies.
Although we consider it vile, why do these
societies(which may have been isolated in the
past) accept it? Some even consider marriage
for a 9 or 10 year old to be normal. I wonder
why our Western culture is so different? Does
our social advancement show how damaging it
is to a child? Answers please.
Not that far back in English history marriage
was seen okay at that age, even our own
royals married children.. I suppose by today
standards we recognise children as children,
in those days people died in the 40s ,
classed of old age... age and maturity did
have a different meaning.
Having sex with a minor is sick enough, sex
with your own child is beyond evil.
Thats true - I'd forgotten about the incest
dimension - but it still doesn't answer why
some societies still insist on premature
marriage (and so sex) - even when aware of
the general antithesis to it.
That's the crux of my question - they are
aware/enlightened as to the damage being
done, but carry on doing it. Why? And why do
whole societies condone it? I saw a clip of
an Islamic cleric state it kept women 'pure'
(ie. hating sex). I think it is a mysoginist
trait meself.
because they grow up in their world being
told its normal and right, they know no
better, their beliefs are ingrained and
strong.. if you grow up being told its right
by adults, you will become a adult thinking
its right.
But there is also some mixed up societies and
groups - I have seen people on these threads
long ago defend the idea of a 9 yr old being
betrothed - it is not simply individuals.
They would argue we have no right to
interfere in their social mores.
