Religious Education

I listened to an interesting debate recently.
Parents in the UK can now stop their children
from attending religious education classes.

When I was at school, RE was all about the
Bible and no other religion was discussed.
Apparently, that has changed now and all
faiths are mentioned as part of the
curriculum.

I think it is a mistake not to educate
children about religion because they will
certainly come across it and knowledge
dispels fear. The people closest to me are
Pagan, Hindu, Sikh, Agnostic, Muslim and
Christian. At least I understand where they
are coming from.

I think its quite important to teach them
about religions and atheism..

I'm very much against them practicing though,
education and preaching are a world apart..

This was an open question, to which I
expected some to comment about childrens' RE.

Like most, I followed my parents' beliefs (or
the lack of them). At what age (if any)
should people, however young or old, make up
their own minds?

Wether you like it or not, religion forms
cultures and to understand cultures you need
to understand religion.

If you stay ignorant to this then its likely
your ignorant about the lives and cultures of
people around you and ignorance enevitably
leads to conflict.

Personally, I think we should stop children
from attending faith schools- be they
catholic, muslim, jewish etc.

All schools shoul teach about religions, but
not teach religion - or at least not the
devisive way religion is taught at present.
Iv noticed that the people educated in single
faith schools to be the least tolerant of
other beleifs and that is having a negative
impact on our society.

I can still remember my religious studies at
school, the teacher was a bible bashing
freak, he scared me crapless, once I fell
asleep in his class and he hit me over the
head with a bible, well that's not exactly
showing a good example of the love of god.

I dont see the problem with children being
taught about religion, but it should be open
and wide to show all religions and different
concepts and not a lesson to dictate that one
religion is right and the rest is lies.

Education should be non-biased and open to
questioning.

My RE tutor (a lay preacher), was also
atrocious. Not only was he an evangelist on
the bible, but he had poor presentation
skills.

He could not utter a single sentence without
saying "um" at least once, so I took to
counting the number of times he said it as
opposed to taking notes.

RE was the only subject that I got a 'C'
grade in at 'O' level, but I wear that as a
'badge of honour'.

From my experience it was teachings of his
own beliefs, which were biased... I don't
think education should be from a persons own
personal beliefs.. but from a wide range of
sourced information.

Dunno really - but I suppose there's no harm
in schools giving a disspassionate account of
each religion - as long as it doesn't amount
to 'worship'. Anyway, why would any
self-respecting deity want a pathetic little
species like humanity to cringe before them?
Insecurity perhaps?

I am an atheist who believes that God exists.
He exists in the minds of billions of people
around the world.

It may be that religious faith gives people
comfort in times of tragedy or loss by
providing them with the expectation of
something after their earthly existence. It
may even be that some look to religion to
provide them with a moral compass.

I know that those who would harm others in
the name of religion are very, very few. (We
have come a long way since the 14th
century.)

I have seen that it is in the nature of
(virtually) all humans to be welcoming and
sharing with others, regardless of race or
religion; to be charitable and compassionate
to others, regardless of race or religion;
and most of us would try to aid distressed
animals.

Our children should be taught the basic
tenets of the world’s major religions (and
political doctrines.) Their consciences will
guide them.

You sound like the Eternal optimist Sawney,

believe humanity is essentially 'good'

so thin, it disapeares when things go wrong -
I would really like to believe you were right

Well the basic tenets of Judaeo-Christianity
is the world is inherently evil, the flesh is
mortified and humans are fundamentally
sinfull. So what will the consciences of
children be like after learning this?

Martyn does have a point when he says the
three main religions see humanity as
'sinfull' - They seem to go out of thier way
to show how lowly mankind is - how we should
prostrate ourselves to a narcisistic deity.
Nietszche was correct, when he stated that
mankind has surrendered all its good traits
(justice/mercy etc) to a 'God' who according
to them is the only source for these virtues.
He is also right when he states we should
claim them back - the 'goodness' in humans
belongs to HUMANITY - not 'God'.

Methinks that came from Ecce Homo - but I
found it very poignant - these 'Gods' have
stolen everything virtuous in mankind.
Religion treats humanity as the leper to be
'redeemed' or requiring 'salvation', when it
is religion itself that requires redemption,
after f*cking up people's minds over
thousands of years.

Doug, my bro. you are right 100%, but not
110%, you see, It is about you at the end of
the day.
I am not a Politician, and Polotics is what
get things confused and mixed up, we dont
need it, but we cannot terminate it, such as
we cannot terminate religious education.

We should let things we grew up adapting be
for the purposes they are made for, whether
we want to be Politicaly correct, or
Religiously correct. But let us take
decisions that are not going to be harmful or
assultive to the unborn and the Born free.

You as an individual have the power to shape
thing the way you want your world to be, as I
have said, it is about you at the end of the
day.

Martyn my bro, to clarify the confussion of
the apple with the pear. having the knowledge
that there is a God in exsitance, is the your
basic fundamental consciousness to the world
you live in.

Having said that, you need to escort this
knowledge with theoritical and practical
sessions, and that means religious
Education.God is religion and religion is
God. How Can you be a God fearing Man, When
you are not religiosly introduced to him,
whom do you then fear?

our exsistence is down to something completly
different to an invisible force called god,or

some peeps think we were created by aliens,in

I suppose an analogy would be like a monkey
trying to figure out how a TV set works - so
are humans in trying to work out the
beginnings/hows/why's of the Universe - we
simply haven't the capacity as yet. But
religion would be like the monkey worshipping
the TV, because it was beyond its reasoning
capabilities. That's religion.
