Pay-As-You-Drive?

Does anyone have pay-as-you-drive car
insurance cover?

If you do, has it worked out to be much
cheaper than the conventional insurance
scheme you were with before?

# A Global Positioning System (GPS) is fitted
to your car for free. The GPS allows us to
work out how you use you car, so you can
enjoy a fairer premium. - Norwich Union

Would you be happy to have a small black box
in your car that tracks all the journeys you
make or would that be a step too far when it
comes to your privacy?

God we'd go for that! We keep a car going for
the odd trip up Manchester for family health
emergencies - other than that we drive it 8
miles a week (Dead enviromental we are)

Should check out the Norwich Union website
Whisky, see what you think.

It says you can save up to 30% if you drive
less than 6000 miles a year.

Presumably those who avoid driving on the
busy roads during rush hour can make the
biggest savings.

I need to find some feedback on the p.a.y.d
schemes (assuming there are others), see if
they're any good. Maybe go with one next year
when my current insurance is due for
renewel.

I wouldn't have one of those black boxes in
my car even if the insurance was free. The
trouble with most people is that they think
it's only "other people" who would be
watched. Governments by their nature are
voyeuristic at the best of times.

Not a chance!

If it tracks where you drive, it also tracks
how fast you drive too!

I'd do it. The moment I get home from the
garage, that black box would come straight
off the car and sit in the garage.

Obviously that would look a bit suspicious if
it just fell off the radar so I'd hook it up
to a spare battery and then take it for a
trip to the shops every other weekend.

It sounds like a good idea in principle but
too easy to get around. For every idea like
this there will be plenty of people prepared
to scam it, me included.

Besides, we already pay as we drive. It's
called buying petrol!

On the insurance topic though, as soon as
that black box is fitted the car would be
straight home, spanners out and box removed
to find a new home on the shelf in the
garage. Obviously that'd look suspicious if
it just fell off the radar so hook it up to a
spare battery and job's a good'un.

Take it out to the shops every other weekend
to keep the investigators away and voila!
Cheap insurance! Yeah, I'd go for that.

The problem with this idea is that it's easy
to bypass. For every idea like this there are
plenty of people prepared to scam it so it
just won't work.

If your car was to get stolen and you had
pay-as-you-drive insurance I wonder whether
the tracker could be used to find the car.

If they can't do that yet they should look
into adapting the technology so it can be
done.

Should get quite a good discount off your
insurance with a security tracker fitted.

OK, that was weird. I tried to post before
and it didn't work. I posted again and both
posts appeared.

I just don't understand sometimes...

You do. The gizmo is actually called a
"Tracker"

It has been on the market for 10 years or
more now and some insurers of high value cars
insist on one being fitted.

If this pay-as-u-drive rubbish gets made law,
I'm selling the car and stopping driving
completely.

Where I go in my car is my business, and my
business alone. Anyone thinking this is a
good idea should go for it, since you are too
stupid to value your privacy, you don't
deserve it.

I agree with whitespider - it's not like you
can detatch the thing once it's in.
It's just another thing that 'big brother'
will be watching.

Unfortunately, that is exactly what this
deluded, blinkered, nanny state of ours would
like you to do.

Paranoia Chris? No, just good old healthy,
justifiable cynicism

Hmm...

Time will tell whether the cynicism is
justifiable.

Are there any known examples of people who've
chosen to use tracking systems in their
vehicles having their human rights breached
as a result?

FFS ... it's not about breaching human
rights, it's just another step towards
opening up more stealth revenue schemes for
the bloody government.

Let me ask you Chris ... when did the
proportional tax you pay Mssrs Brown &
Darling, both direct AND indirect, go down?

It hasn't has it?

Now, can you honestly say that all the things
that we pay this tax for, like public
transport, health service, kids education ...
has improved in standards?

The BOE have now even propped up the high
street banks with billions of pounds worth of
bonds to bail them out of their current fix
... which they and the Gov't combined got
them into in the first place ... but they say
they are going to do their best to ensure it
doesn't effect the UK tax payer adversely!

And you really think getting people to put
tracker boxes on their cars is purely to help
them save money on their car insurance?

I admire your faith Chris.

I'm not so sure. Car owners are a huge
cash-cow and we are being milked for every
last drop. Trying to put us off driving is a
bit of an own goal.

As for concern over my privacy being labelled
paranoia by Chris. You're only paranoid if
they're not watching you.
