How long can you keep the clutch on a car at
biting point without it burning?

Do you think it's okay to keep the clutch at
biting point for about 10 seconds or is that
too long?

A very long time. Just because it is at
biting point does not mean it is slipping.

It is however better to just keep it in
neutral at the lights or have the clutch
fully depressed as this will cause less wear
in the long run ... albeit marginal.

I'd say it depends largely on what car you're
talking about. Some are very brittle, whilst
others can take a fair bit of abuse. A
general rule is: if you can smell it, you're
cooking it.

Why take the risk?
Just stick it in neutral - unless you're a
boy-racer raring to go as soon as you can to
beat the guy next to you - that's how i burnt
my clutch out; too much racing and winning
down to good clutch control, and on more than
one car too lol
Expensive hobby winning!!

I got a lift to the shop with a guy at work
one day and he's got L-plates on his car i
asked him you got a provisional licence and
he says ohh there my gf's i got a full
licence until we came to the end of the road
to turn off on a hill and he had to stop to
give right of way he put the handbrake on he
got that right then we got a clear road and
he sticks it in 3rd gear instead of 1st and
the car cuts out and i pull the handbrake so
we don't roll back into the car behind. He
puts it in neutral starts the car and again
sticks it in 3rd gear only this time he
floors the accelerator and the engine revs up
and the cluth is burning the smoke is flying
outa the bonnet the car.The car behind is
blowing the horn and making obscene
gestures. In the end i had to drive the rest
of the way to the shop and back he was so
nervous i wasn't chancing it.

He was a learner driver socrates he thought
that he would act the big man saying he had a
full licence like it mattered. He just made a
big tool out of himself instead.
