Should I change to Linux |

I have a PC with A linux add-on board
(card)with a phone socket.
So presumably it would be ready for a Linux
OS?
But what are the Pro's and Con's
Windows Is user friendly and Familar, but
very controlling of your PC.
Would learning/using the Linux OS, be worth
the change.
Any opinions Please? |

This is a question which cant be answered
easely.
It all depends on how you use your pc, what
are you expecting from a pc? If you want to
just have everything working, easely without
sleepless nights... DONT swtch to linux.
Personally I've been using serveral linux and
unix flavours for serveral years. The power
of a linux OS lies in scripting and coding.
You can automate everything with self-made
scripts. You can have various system parts
communicate with eachother in an easy way
(example: you run a website with java/php
which makes use of a mysql database).
It really takes time and efford to get
familiar with a linux operating system. it's
NOT like windows. A basic understanding of
how a computer workes is a musthave.
Hmmmm, I'd say... google is your friend mate

There's enough resources and tutorials online
to get started with linux. hehehe, don't
expect it to be easy though
....
Sleepless nights when you start using *nix

Word.
Amen.
lol Yeah what that aal guy said... I've used
Knoppix, Ubuntu, RedHat, SuSE, Kannotix for a
while now.. only messing with them so I know
roughly what I'm doing... I have [censored]
all coding knowledge for *nix - I should
really start learning because it is
incredibly powerful.
If you're not sure what you're doing then
stick with what you know best.
And Windows ISN'T too controlling of your PC
at all... you just have to know how to turn
these controlling parts off!! |

The linux distros I have seen/used Ubuntu
(Gnome) and Kubunto (KDE), Debian, Mandrake,
RedHat, SuSe, Fedora, Knoppix, Gentoo, LFS
(Linux from scratch)... But the distro I
really really REALLY love is Slackware!
Ubunto or Kubuntu are ok linuxes to install
and see what it looks like, though don't
really expect to be forced to learn anything
from it.
With a distro like Slackware or Gentoo you're
beeing forced to do everything yourself
(configging). There are no userfriendly point
& click menus here. So those two might not be
really good to start with.
Go for (k)ubntu
And like I said before... google is your
friend!
Good luck!

I prefer to work on commandline most of the
times, hehehe, that's just letters...
Looks aint really important when it comes to
linux.. just my opinion....

Linux is both a joy and a labour of love. In
many ways it is similar to Windows and in
many other ways it is totally unlike Windows.
The one thing seasoned Windows users are not
prepared for when using Linux is the
unfamiliar directory structure, which at
first glance is TOTALLY alien.
If you're expecting Linux to work as well as
Windows straight out of the box (aka - first
time install) then you are going to be sadly
surprised. Although some distributions are
very user-friendly such as Ubuntu, SuSe and
Redhat. Sometimes, a lot of effort is
required to learn and become familiar with
what you are trying to achieve and how to
achieve it. If this seems boring or pointless
to you then read no further. You're wasting
your time.
If all you want to do is play games, surf and
chat on the internet and download email then
stick to Windows. If you want an education
into installing, maintaining and
understanding how your computer software
works then try Linux. There are hundreds and
thousands of websites supporting every
distribution of Linux so any difficulties you
might face can usually be solved just by
spending some time on the Internet search
engines. If you like to learn new things then
go for it, is my advice.
Windows is no better or worse than Linux just
as Ford cars are no better or worse than
Volkswagen. They both do the same job
fundamentally. At the end of the day the
choice is yours. :> |

Desktop wise Linux is still a bit of a
[censored], too many splits with install
methods etc etc.
Where it shows off is on lower end hardware,
XP features on a p3 box
I've been lucky enough not to be restricted
to only using Windows so am quite happy to
fiddle with different OS's for different
tasks.
Without starting a flamewar my opinion is
Windows -pros- plenty of non techy help
around, sadly to say 1st choice for
manufacture support, drivers etc.
If your a gamer pretty much the choice is
made for you
cons- cost, can be a bit of an arse crashing
Unix & like - pros- FREE , great for low
spec web browsers, kids machines & Servers.
Live OS's
Cons - Learning curve if you're used to the
Win file system, driver support (getting
better)....
OSX - pros- It just works, simple stable &
sexy
cons -Only for Macs (well almost)
Other options are dual boot or using a live
distro, Ubuntu recomended personal choice but
Beryl is soo orgasmic forget Vista Aero.
Oh yeah final note avoid Vista like the
plague
plenty can prob add more to the pros & cons
but like I said personal choice.
Me being me would say get an Amiga & forget
all your troubles , can of worms opened. |

Hi all,
I am downloading the ubuntu iso now but...
For me, I think a dual boot is best.
I have 2 seperate hard drives, one smaller
one
(60GB), which I'm going to install Linux on
and
an 80GB, which has windows XP Pro on it.
I've got a belkin high-speed internet card,
which i'm NOT getting rid of. I know that
means i have to go on XP to go on the
internet but I don't mind, because all people
I know use windows, and several i need to
e-mail things in winsows formats, so i can
live with microsoft for long enough to do
that.
I think this situation's just me, but fsm,
I'm sure there are things for you which
decided it, just like there are things for me
which decided it. |

Thanks guys, some interesting thoughts,
You are right about Vista, my sis has it, she
can keep it ha ha
I was quite happy with windows 95/98 ha ha
but of course outdated.
I will try one of the other systems at some
point just to see what its all about.
But have a feeling it would take loads of
brain hours to get it where its working with
all the functions I need, chat, java, Mirc,
databases etc.
so plod on with XP Proff for now, but there's
a market for a rival definately |

Been running ubuntu on my laptop for about
6months perfectly happily now
only problems i've had were issues with
codecs because of the copyright laws (the fix
is well documented and easy to follow
though), a problem with the mysql database
(english version : a back-end that controls
some other stuff) which ultimately had to be
re-installed but to be fair, it was kinda my
own fault for fiddling with it in the first
place and finally, some initial grief
finding and setting up the right application
to use [censored] & googletalk. Most of the
documentation i found on that was pretty naff
On the plus side though, i have no major
compatibility issues with m/s - didn't
even have to worry when the new vista office
jobby was released - an excel doc opened
straight away heh heh
Oh n personally i've found it far easier to
get the programs i want to .... er ....
"back-up" cd's and dvd'd lol!
Not forgetting the ultimate bit that its all
free too perfect
If it's just for daily web, email and admin
stuff then i'd say give it a spin for sure
Not so hot for games though .... is getting
better though |
