Pre-fight jitters

Does anyone else get ridiculously
stressed/nervous before a fight or comp?

If so, how do you deal with it/overcome it?

I'm not talking about an actual fear of being
harmed or anything girly like that, but more
'performance anxiety', fear of failure that
sort of thing.

I used to throw up before rugby matches and
it's that sort of thing - basically a massive
adrenaline spike that seems to sap most of my
cardio.

I too suffer from this, can be fighting fit,
great cardio sparring hard for hours,
technically have no doubts but come comp time
it all goes. Winyourmmafight[censored] is
place where you can find more about how to
relax before your fight or comp. The tips
given there helped me a lot.

Its all about the mind. Firstly I would
suggest meditation. Not particularly "on"
anything. Just calm your mind. Empty it. Stop
it from pounding at you. Thats a good start.
Then work on your confidence. Being arrogant
is better than being jittery. Just dont be
overconfident to the point where you think
you dont have to train to win anything.
Constantly tell yourself that you have the
potential to be a great fighter. Or even tell
yourelf that you are a great fighter.
Whenever you fight, there is always a way to
read your opponent and create a strategy.
Even 10 seconds before the first strike is
thrown. Any kind of strategy is better than
no strategy. Examine your opponent
objectively. Are they a grappler or a
striker? Are they trained in karate or muay
thai? Will they know how to clinch? Will they
be looking to take you to the floor? What
will they know and what wont they? But also
take it a step further. Work on their
perception of you. If you are fighting
someone who knows the style you do and knows
you are trained in it then mix it up a little
and break their strategy. If they are
expecting you to work on striking them then
change. Try to take them to the floor. They
wont expect it and the "oh [censored]"
reaction will give you an advantage. This
works on the street as well. Agressive people
are always overconfident about their fighting
skills. Even when drunk or outmanned. They
will never assess you properly and will
usually lose to an intelligent fighter. Look
into street combat tactics and learn them.
This will give you more confidence when you
understand the psychology of an average
scallie. Good luck.
