looking for common sense advice

I have been looking around Huddersfield to
buy a house for a few weeks but get
conflicting advice, as follows:
Nice semi in Birkby near that factory that is
getting demolished, people say don't go to
Birkby!!
Go up New Hey Rd, possibility in Marsh -
people say its takeaway city, getting a bit
out of hand at weekends, dont go there!!
Lindley - seems to be getting to believe its
own hype,no thanks.
Salendine Nook/ Oakes - nice but pricey cos
of the school catchment area or something.
Almondbury - seems OK but people say 'careful
- there are two Almondburys!!
Kirkheaton - getting out of town, but only 2
pubs?
Dont get me wrong, i'm not a reveller (too
old now!). Basically I want a fairly
quiet/safe location with 3 or 4 decent
boozers to visit at the weekend.
Any ideas, people of Hudds?, cos I keep
getting conflicting tales.

I am not from Huddersfield but Brighouse
which is a small town just out side
Huddersfield but I have a friend up in the
Emley area of Huddersfield that seems to like
it up there and like that area.Maybe that
area is worth having a look in to. Not sure
what it is like but from what they tell me it
seems okay. Maybe worth having a look at that
area and seeing what you think of it.

I hope that you find the right house and area
for you soon.

Yes I do ask in the local pubs.
Trouble is, Marsh residents say 'I wouldn't
live in Birkby' is it a high crime area or is
it now getting completely Asian? (i'm not and
can understand that point of view)
Birkby residents say 'I wouldn't live in
Marsh', too many pubs & takeaways bring
trouble and rubbish etc.
Almondbury residents tell me to buy 'up the
hill'- it's all on a hill!
Kirkheaton - pub was empty, but barmaid said
Waterloo was a good area!

Ask at estate Agents or renting places they
might be able to tell you about good or bad
areas and where you should be looking and
trying. They are the people that sell and
deal with houses in all kinds of areas so
they should know. Maybe worth a try you never
know.

Thanks madeinscotland, but I disagree. The
estate agents are the last ones to tell you
the truth about a property or an area! They
want to make a sale and get their fee. End Of
Story. Read some of their house descriptions
- 'compact accomodation near to motorway
network in need of slight updating, in
popular area etc.....

just an idea the try an estate agents thing.
I don't know what works and what doesn't you
see. Sorry if that piece of advice was no
good. I am trying to help you know but like I
said not sure what works and what doesn't.

Not having a go at you, but estate agents get
their fee from the seller, not the buyer. And
they don't have to live there after the sale
has completed!

Have a drive around some areas of
huddersfield if you have a car that is and
see what you like. At end of day what other
what others think about an area shoulden't
matter as long as your happy there and have a
house there you like that should be all that
matters.

call me mad, but there are streets and houses
that are blessed with the name of a high
crime rate area eg is sheepbridge. off from
there which borders fixby is a little area
which has lovely homes, and a local which is
within staggering distance. But i think the
gentlemans idea of asking the locals, is a
good idea for yourself, it is something I
would do if I was in the market to buy. good
luck with your hunt.

Best to head around mount, outlane,
brighouse, and Scapegoat hill. Alot of hype
around Lindley. Birkby is full of Pakistanis
and your house re-sale price will suffer as
well as your kids getting a third rate
education. Lower almondbury (near town
centre)full of social rejects and former
students.

A good rule of thumb is check how far is the
nearest mosque and Halaal Butcher - if a car
ride away then you should be ok.

BTW - I am an asian.

Thanks for the advice jazman, your honesty is
noted. I thank you for that.
Something about many English people is their
politeness and reluctance to offend at all
costs - the truth is often not said for fear
of offending or hurting the feelings of
someone.

Otherwise, what's the point?

Every places regardless where it is has it
ups and downs plus it's good and bad areas.
You just need to find what is right for you
and what makes you happy. Life is about
making the best of where ever you live and
trying to be happy there. There is nothing
worse than being some where your not happy
and happy just like a job suituation.

Have fun and at end of day it down to you to
find what makes you happy we can only give
you the advice you need to help you on your
way to decide.

Skelmanthorpe, Emley, Scissett or Denby Dale
ZZZZZ! Bloody hell, is that the best you can
offer me? Scissett/ Denby Dale is just one
very busy link road to the M1 flanked by
terrace houses. But at least, Emley and
Skelmanthorpe have excellent TV
reception!Seems a bit parochial though, is it
a case of don't mention the miners strike or
something like that? I'm getting to realise
the obvious - I love the city but I hate the
city. I love the countryside but I hate the
countryside. We would all like to pick the
best bits of each - great idea for a computer
game 'Fantasy Home Town UK'

of these wether you want false conversation
and back patting from the posh lot or a pint
an a kebab on a friday you'll find it all in
the valley marsden is my home village and has
become quite expensive recently but there are
some good houses out there if you dig about a
bit... good luck to you and try the old new
inn marsden for a good pint aned warm

Thanks Linda, you may be right - the further
out of Hudds you get the people are
friendlier and they dont want to kick your
head in so much (except Golcar!). Once you
get past Cowlersley you are laughing!
Slaithwaite (Slowit?) has nice Pennine
scenery but it rains a lot and the A62 to
Oldham is not the most magical of
highways! And Marsden, where is the actual
county line? we must be getting too close for
comfort??

I found this thread interesting. Altho I've
lived in Huddersfield (15 mins from town
centre) for 5 years I don't really know it,
or the surrounding areas, too well. My house
is going to be demolished (when the council
get their finger out and decide WHEN)so I
have to choose somewhere to live, not an easy
task when I don't know anyone to ask. Altho
where I live LOOKS rough, and some of the
residents are into drugs, I can honestly say
I haven't had many problems while living
here. My motorbike was vandalised and someone
keeps cutting my washing line but apart from
that it's not as rough as it appears; my
point being that you can't always tell that a
neighbourhood is going to be a good one just
cos it looks decent, and vice versa.

try slaithwaite and marsden, they are a
little out of town but good community spirit
and a local night scene, its not spectacular
but its enough to enjoy!!! the colne valley
is a rapidly developing area too so house
values will rise quicker in proportion to the
rest of hudds.

Just to keep people posted, I ended up taking
a 6 month rental near Bailiff Bridge in
Brighouse, while I wait for the property
crash and houses to become realistically
priced (I wish!)
Re: local pubs, I am a bit disappointed. They
are either one extreme or the other 'chavs
only ' or 'pub/restaurant - can't sit down
without ordering a 3 course meal'
Brighouse centre is apparently a good place

You always have to maoan and talk about the
down sides of a place with out just getting
on with it and trying to look to the good
things.

I live in Brighouse and wont have anyone that
hasn't live there like I have be nasty
towards it. Now Rastrick that is a bit of a
no no and trouble goes on there.

Amyway not trying to be nasty just seems to
be from these posts all you do is moan about
areas being trouble or chav like with out
just geting on with the area or place and
trying to see the good point. Life is too
short to moan about silly stuff

I wasn't putting Brighouse down as a place,
it's as good or as bad as many other places.
I am indeed 'getting on with it'.I just
mentioned the lack of decent boozers
available to a keen drinker. Your loyalty to
your adopted home town is touching, but I
think forums are there for moaners as well as
those with rose coloured spectacles.

I wasn't being nasty and sorry if it looked
that way jusr was getting a bit fed up seeing
you moan on here a lot that was and was
getting to me. There is good and bad about
all places if we only ever looked at the bad
we would never live any where. A place is
what you make of it and such like same with
live what you make off it.

Your I am loyal to where I live as I have
lived in much worse places and had to just
get on with it. Brighouse has so much going
for it like you can get to just about every
place around here in under an hour by bus.

I was not being nasty. I have give you my
advice many times even when you sent me
messages and I know ever where has the bad
points but life is too short to moan about
them just get on with life and where you
live.
