| Singer Michael Jackson dies in LA |
Pop star Michael Jackson has died in Los Angeles, aged 50.
Paramedics were called to the singer's home around midday local time on Thursday after he stopped breathing and suffered a suspected cardiac arrest.
He was rushed by ambulance to a local medical centre, but his death was announced shortly afterwards.
The star, who had a history of health problems, had been due to begin a series of comeback concerts in the UK on 13 July.
Concerns were raised last month when four of the concerts were postponed, but organisers insisted the dates had been moved due to the complexity of staging the show.
A spokeswoman for The Outside Organisation, which was organising the publicity for the shows, said she had no comment at this time.
Uri Gellar, a close friend of the star, told BBC News: "I'm devastated - it's very, very sad.
DJ Paul Gambaccini added: "There's no doubt [his] records will be listened to for decades to come.
"There will be millions of people in the world who will have extreme emotional reactions."
Speaking outside the UCLA medical centre in Los Angeles, civil rights activist Rev Al Sharpton paid tribute to his friend.
"I knew him 35 years. When he had problems he would call me," he said.
"I feel like he was not treated fairly. I hope history will be more kind to him than some of the contemporary media."

Farrah Fawcett dies aged 62 after losing battle with cancer
Farrah Fawcett, the actress famed for her role in Charlie's Angels, has died following a long battle with cancer.
Her longtime partner, Ryan O'Neal, said she died in her hospital bed in Los Angeles after being admitted earlier this week.
"After a long and brave battle with cancer, our beloved Farrah has passed away."
"Although this is an extremely difficult time for her family and friends, we take comfort in the beautiful times that we shared with Farrah over the years and the knowledge that her life brought joy to so many people around the world," O'Neal said in a statement.
The actress, 62, was diagnosed with rectal cancer in 2006 and had surgery to remove a tumour.
A year later she discovered the cancer had returned and despite experimental treatment in Germany it spread to her liver.
Fawcett and O'Neal, who announced they were due to marry in a death bed ceremony earlier this week, have been together since 1982 and O'Neal has been a constant presence by her side as she battles a very public battle with cancer.
Her fight had been the focus of a moving documentary, Farah's Story, released just weeks before her death and watched by over nine million people.
In an interview on US TV, O'Neal talked about Fawcett's deteriorating condition.
"She's fighting for her life", he told interviewer Barbara Walters for the ABC-TV investigative show 20/20.
Fawcett met O'Neal after the end of her marriage to Lee Majors in 1982. The couple have had a stormy relationship and have split up several times.
They have one son, Redmond, 24, who is currently in jail on drug charges.
In a statement, a spokesman said Fawcett had "passed to a better place and left the pain and confines of her bed behind".
The actress will be remembered for her big smile and feathered blond mane which made her one of the sex symbols of the 1970s.
